Years after partnering with Sustainable Harvest International, Isabel Roderíguez from Bella Florida, Panama, is living the bright future he once only imagined.
Last year, Sustainable Harvest International’s President and Founder, Florence Reed, took us to Panama to see how Isabel Roderíguez and his family were doing since joining forces with us in 2003. Recently, we heard from Isabel, who had this to say:
"I never imagined that I would have a house of durable materials or that my daughters would be where they are now; one graduated and the other about to graduate from the university in Panama City. Thanks to training and support from Sustainable Harvest International, I established my garden with an irrigation system and planting fruit and hardwood trees. I have improved my house because I learned to save the farm’s earnings. My older daughter, Aracelys, is in the final stages of applying for a scholarship to study in the US. This is more than I ever hoped, because the norm in our area is only to complete sixth grade,and even that is an accomplishment for a humble family like ours.
In the surroundings of the Bella Florida community, and even more where I live, there is a greater variety of animals and birds than before. For instance, pacas pass through my farm, but since we don't hunt them, they don't flee this place. The grafted orange trees that I planted with Sustainable Harvest International are already producing fruit just like the coffee. I've had many visits from foreigners and my own country, which is strong motivation to keep working."

"En lo personal, como soy una persona humilde, yo nunca imaginaba que iba a tener una casa de materiales duraderos y mucho menos que mis hijas estuvieran, una graduada y la otra a punto de graduarse de la universidad de Panamá. Esto no hubiera sido posible sin la ayuda de la organización Cosecha Sostenible, porque gracias a sus capacitaciones y al apoyo recibido en el establecimiento de mi huerto con un sistema de riego y la siembra de arboles frutales y maderables, he logrado mucho de lo que hoy día tengo. Mi vivienda la he mejorado, porque aprendí a ahorrar con lo poco que genera la finca y lo supe aprovechar para el beneficio de toda la familia. Mi hija mayor Aracelys, está en estos momentos en la etapa final de un concurso para logra una beca para estudiar en los Estados Unidos, esto nunca lo esperé, porque lo común en nuesto medio, era solo llegar hasta sexto grado de educación primaria y ya era un logro bien representativo para una familia humilde, como la nuestra.
En el entorno de la comunidad de Bella Florida y más donde yo vivo, si hay más variedad de animales y aves que antes, como por ejemplo. el conejo pintado que se pasea en mi finca, pero como no lo cazamos, él no se ahuyenta de este lugar. Los árboles de naranjos injertados que sembré con el programa, ya están dando frutos al igual que el café. He recibido muchas visitas de extranjeros y nacionales, lo cual es para mí un estímulo para seguir luchando."
