Why We Can Hardly Wait for Climate Ride!

Have you heard all our carrying on about the upcoming Climate Ride from Bar Harbor to Boston lately? (No? Not even here? Or here? Or here?) Maybe you’re even a generous contributor to Elliott’s ride? (Thank you!) Or maybe you’re a proud supporter of a local business sponsor? (Thank you, thank you!)

Or maybe you’re still trying to figure out what the heck Climate Ride is, why we’re so excited, and what it has to do with saving forests and ending poverty in Central America?

That’s fair, too. Just let us explain.

WHAT’S CLIMATE RIDE?
Climate Ride is a national nonprofit organization that organizes life-changing charitable adventures to raise awareness about climate change and alternative transportation. Like us, they’re big on sustainable solutions to complicated problems. Climate Ride has granted more than $3.1 million in support of conservation, sustainability, and active transportation. When bikers and hikers join a Climate Ride event, they’re looking out for future of the planet. You can learn more about Climate Ride here.

WHY IS SUSTAINABLE HARVEST INTERNATIONAL SO EXCITED ABOUT CLIMATE RIDE?

Field Program Director Elliott Powell has been preparing for the 400-mile ride from Bar Harbor, Maine to Boston on September 8.

Field Program Director Elliott Powell has been preparing for the 400-mile ride from Bar Harbor, Maine to Boston on September 8.

Because our intrepid Country Program Director, Elliott Powell, is participating in the ride! He’s been training for months (check out the Instagram evidence!) and pretty soon he’ll pack up his gear and join the five day, 400 mile trip. He’ll also present our mission to other riders and spread the world about the important impact your donations are having in Central America.

But wait, there’s more!

Climate Ride has also named us a beneficiary charity this year, which means that whenever anyone in the country signs up for a Climate Ride event, they can choose to have a portion of their fundraising sent to Sustainable Harvest International! We’re grateful for the help and excited about the new activists Climate Ride is putting us in touch with.

Last but not least, we’ve received a landslide of community support for our involvement in Climate Ride. The following incredibly generous businesses have offered us their financial support, which not only makes us feel great, but also means we can help more people and save more forests. THAT’S what has us so fired up!

Support ‘em if you can:

Not only do we have the support of many local businesses, but the Downtown Ellsworth Association is coordinating a Rider Rally at 10:15 am, on September 8 to cheer cyclists on as they pass through downtown Ellsworth, Maine, home of our U.S. office. Wanna know more? drop us a line, and if you’re in the area, please join us!

WHAT DOES CLIMATE RIDE HAVE TO DO WITH OUR MISSION OF PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT AND INCREASING WELL-BEING THROUGH SUSTAINABLE FARMING?

Great question!

Have you heard? Climate change poses a significant threat to food security in Central America. We’re working as hard as we can with rural farmers to end slash-and-burn agriculture and promote sustainable methods, but we’re counting on the effort of many other climate change advocacy groups, as well.

Making an impact is going to require a lot of work, and Climate Ride is bringing the right people together. We want to be friends with Climate Ride’s friends! Like you, they’re movers and shakers who believe people and the planet have a huge impact on each other.

We’re also generating funds that directly support our mission. That means that through participation in Climate Ride, we’re able to do more to support sustainable agriculture and farming families in Panamá, Honduras, and Belize.

All of this has us understandably pumped up.

Plus, Elliott gets a workout and we hear there will be snacks!

Thank you again to everyone who donated. Stay tuned to hear how things go for Elliott on the road!

Missed your chance to support Elliott’s ride? Consider donating directly to Sustainable Harvest International. We’d love to put your gift to work planting forests and ending hunger!
