Who are you?
My name is Victor Jose Arboleda Mina. I'm from Ecuador and of African descent. I’m 23 years old and was born in the port city of Guayaquil. I spent most of my childhood in a small community in the Esmeraldas province. The community I grew up in based all of its economic activity on agriculture. My passion is implementing and leading processes, as well as helping people become agents of change for their own destinies. I love having new experiences every day. I like to take on challenges and I'm naturally curious. I like learning from others, but I also try to learn from my own mistakes. It’s hard to define who I am, but these are at least some of my characteristics.
¿Quién soy?
Mi nombre es Victor José Arboleda Mina, soy afrodescendiente ecuatoriano de 23 años de edad, nací en la ciudad de Guayaquil y casi toda mi infancia vivé en la provincia de Esmeraldas, Cantón Eloy Alfaro-Comunidad Timbiré. Esta es una comunidad rural en el cual la agricultura es una de las actividades principales. El liderar procesos y ayudar a otros a que puedan ser protagonistas de sus propios cambios, son las cosas que me apasionan. Además, vivir una experiencia nueva cada día, ser curioso, afrontar retos y poder enriquecer mis conocimientos con experticias de otros, pero también me gusta aprender de mis propios errores. Todas estas son las cosas que definen claramente Quién soy yo.
What do you want from the future?
In the future I see myself participating in large transformative processes, which change my own life while also generating positive changes for others. I see myself working for an institution that has these three core values: freedom of thought, community empowerment, and environmental/economic/social sustainability.
¿Qué quiero en el futuro?
En el futuro me veo, siendo promotor de procesos grandes y emprendedores los cuales cambien para bien mi vida y aportar a generar cambios positivos en la vida de otras personas. En concreto me veo trabajado en una organización que tenga como visión tres cosas que considero para mí son las más importantes: libertad de pensamiento, empoderamiento comunitario y seguridad económica, social y ambiental.

Why do you study at EARTH University?
Before I came to study at EARTH, agronomy was one of the things that least interested me. I couldn’t picture myself working on a livestock farm for the rest of my life. But then I realized this was just part of the rhetoric we were told as kids: that you should leave the fields and look for a better life somewhere else. Now I’m aware that rural communities are not as poor as they often perceive themselves to be; the rural world is rich, but the problem lays in finding how to use the natural richness to improve people’s lives without destroying the environment. I wanted to study at EARTH to try to change this.
¿Porque estudio en la Universidad EARTH?
Antes de entrar a la Universidad EARTH, la Agronomía era una de las cosas que menos me gustaba y no me imaginaba trabajando en una finca con animales toda mi vida. Pero todo esto a raíz de que en las zonas rurales y en especial en mi comunidad, para los jóvenes el sueño de oro es salir del campo y vivir una vida “mejor”. Pero comprendí que esa no es una buena forma de pensar ya que las comunidades rurales no son pobres como ellos lo perciben, más bien son muy ricas en recursos naturales, el problema radica en que no saben cómo administrar de forma eficiente esa riqueza natural con la que cuentan.
Es así como asumí este reto de estudiar en EARTH cambiar mi vida, mis sueños y metas con el fin de aprender cómo se puede aprovechar estos recursos y así poder ayudar cambiar esa forma de pensar de muchos jóvenes,
Why did you apply for an internship with Sustainable Harvest International?
During my time at EARTH University, I've learned that going out to the field is the best education there is. This internship provides the opportunity to go out there and learn about the real challenges small-scale farmers face on daily basis. Also, I want to contribute some of the knowledge I've gotten from EARTH. In addition, the mission and values of Sustainable Harvest International are aligned with what I want for the future.

¿Porque hacer una pasantía con SHI, que espero de la pasantía?
Durante mis tres años de carrera en la Universidad EARTH he aprendido que la mejor escuela para aprender es el campo. SHI es una forma en la que yo puedo vivir esa experiencia real y poder conocer la realidad con la que afrontan cada día los agricultores, además de poder aportar con todo lo aprendido durante estos 3 años de carrera. Y, por último, aparte de que esto es lo que me apasiona, considero que los objetivos y visión de SHI están de acorde con lo que me gustaría hacer en el futuro.
What do you dream of?
I dream of achieving my goals, never stopping dreaming, and being happy with what I do every day.
¿Cuáles son mis sueños?
Mis sueños son poder cumplir mis metas, nuca dejar de soñar y poder ser feliz con lo que hago cada día.
