KENAN Hill
DONOR + research intern

Within an often bleak landscape of climate news, the creativity and passion of young climate activists like Kenan Hill keep us energized and inspired. Surely, if a generation of young people dedicates themselves with Kenan’s enthusiasm to saving the planet, our future will be bright.

Born and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, Kenan has been passionate about environmental issues since a young age. When she was only 17, she made her very first donation to Sustainable Harvest International.

“It was a light bulb moment,” she recalls after reading the SHI website. “It just clicked that you can sequester carbon through sustainable farming practices.”

Since then, she’s been building her life around sustainability and helping transform local food systems.

Kenan is currently a student at North Carolina State University where she studies International Studies and Global Sustainable Development. Whether volunteering at a food pantry, doing cooking demonstrations, or working at a non-profit farm, she’s committed to living out her values both on and off campus.

I credit SHI for getting me back into environmentalism, and then into social justice. They’ve become such important focal points in my life
— Kenan Hill

Kenan has also applied her skills and training to support SHI in its efforts to scale up its impact. Working directly with SHI’s Founder and Director of Strategic Growth, as well as an SHI Board Member, Kenan joined the SHI team as a research intern. In this role, she evaluated a wide array of new opportunities including carbon credits.

Looking to the future, Kenan has many opportunities to continue her work on sustainable food systems and social justice. She’s eager to keep up with SHI’s important work and contribute to efforts to support farmers in their communities.

It wasn’t a question of if I’ll continue this work. It was, ‘when’s the next time I can get my hands in the dirt?’
