Letter from Teadora Chun - Belize

October 5, 2005

Hello,

My name is Teadora Chun. I am 43 years old. I have 10 children, of which two are married.

Let me start off by saying that without this program SHI, I would not have been able to go this far inTeadora and her organic cacao acquiring organic gardening methods, so thanks to SHI and to the extensionist, Mr. Candido Chun, for his encouragement and providing me the technical assistance, the seeds and garden tools I needed on the farm.

I started gardening by planting a little at home. Seeds such as tomato, sweet pepper, cabbage, mustard and carrots were provided to me by SHI. With the little planting done and with the necessary support provided I made some income for my children, which in turn was used to buy school uniform and school supplies.

Veggies were sold in the community, while the family consumed some. Veggies sold locally were tomato, cabbage and mustard. Sweet pepper and carrots I harvested a little and was just not enough for the family, so I request for some more of these seeds.

I had 506 square meters alone in cabbage production at the farm. These cabbage plants made it, the garden looked so beautiful, gorgeous that I don't know how to say or how best to describe how good it looks, but I was very happy about my garden and my plants. Because the one task, which am talking about, is grown organically, with no expensive chemicals used nor even pesticides. With the natural organic fertilizers, as well as the biological control methods I learned from the extensionist, I was able to have a good harvest.

Water availability at the farm is also an issue but not big to worry about. My plan now is to start planting fruit trees and shade trees along this little stream. The vegetable site is the place for growing the best vegetables for the family. Teadora Chun's cabbage patch

Now, I would like to say special thanks to SHI and thus congratulate the extensionist efforts, the SHI Board of Directors, and all SHI supporters for making this work possible.

Thank you very much for your big help and your continued support in Belize.

Thank you,
Teadora Chun
