Testimonial Germán Fajardo Lira - Cerro Silva del Marena National Reserve

Don GermanI have lived in the community of San Sebastián for 10 years.  I work on my farm which is 40 manzanas of land.  I am a park guard of the Cerro Silva del Marena Natural Reserve which is part of the Biological Area of the South Atlantic.  I am also the pastor of the Brothers in Christ Evangelical Church.

I became interested in Sustainable Harvest International because it is an organization that makes the effort to work in our remote community.  I feel very satisfied with everything that Sustainable Harvest has done for me.  The training that the organization has offered has helped so much.  Already on my farm, I had many trees, but thanks to SHI now I also have fruit trees.  I am so impressed with the support I have received from Sustainable Harvest.

SHI is an organization that prefers to work with the poorest communities and demonstrates an extraordinary effort to bring hope to many people living in the country who have seen much suffering.  It is wonderful that SHI has reached me, a park guard, because now I am using the skills I have learned with the organization in my work.

There are many actives that I am practicing with SHI that relate to my work in the park.  It is part of my job to give tree seeds to the people to use for reforestation, but I had not learned how to collect the seeds from the trees.  SHI has given me this knowledge and more.

We count on support from SHI for reforestation.  SHI has also helped with other projects in my work area.  As part of my participation with the organization I have learned how to construct a tree nursery.

Also, I have made a model plantation. This helps so that the people living here can establish plans to manage their farms as I have mine with SHIs support.  As a park guard one of my duties is to teach the people that they can manage their land so that they dont destroy the natural resources.  Also, my wife and I have learned how to make food from soy beans.  This also has to do with my work because there have been many times that I have talked to people about how all the plants are important and useful in our lives. Many plants, like soy, can be used, not only for food, but to fertilize the soil as well.

I hope SHI will be able to help more families plant trees so that they will be protected from drought in the summer and show them they dont need to burn the land.  I hope that the organization can help us get a water pump to irrigate and protect the fruit trees during the summer.  We unite in our work so that we can protect more of the natural resources and SHI supports my work of speaking with other communities.

Many forest animals are almost at the point of extension.  I explain to the people that we can create a place where these animals can be protected.

As a park guard, it is my responsibility to work with the following communities:  Las Breñas, San José Las cuevas, Caño Azul, La Lignia.  I have the support of SHI with the work on my farm and am planting areas of my land with trees so that in the future I will not have to take trees from the forest for lumber.  I also have started nurseries of cedar and mahogany with the objective of reforesting the area around my communitys water shed so that the water sources will be protected for future generations.

I have planted an area of around 300 ft squared with pigeon peas to fertilize the soil so that I will not have to clear new land each year.  I also have a garden with annatto and a grove of plantains.  These crops will bring in more income for my family.

Thank you SHI.  God bless you
