Leaving the Legacy of a Healthy Environment

Sr. Marcial Urbina prepares a homemade, natural fertilizer to use on his farm in the community of La Pichinga, Kukra Hill, Nicaragua.We want to share with you the story of another inspiring SHI participant, Sr. Marcial Urbina:

At a young age, Marcial Urbina moved away from his hometown in the Boaco region of Nicaragua to look for work in the banana plantations and in the extraction of rubber. By working hard as a laborer in these industries, he was able to buy a bit of land in the community of La Pichinga. He dreamed of having a dignified life with his family and his community.

He is now 69 years old and has lived in La Pichinga for forty years. He is married with three children and seven grandchildren. His hope for working with Sustainable Harvest is that his community should improve its standard of living while protecting the environment. He hopes that through this, he can leave a great and selfless legacy to future generations.

In Marcial's Own Words...

A year ago I started to work with Sustainable Harvest and I am very grateful.  I have learned to improve my soil with the preparation and application of organic fertilizer (compost, green fertilizer from purple and bay beans, worm humus, and cow manure) which I produce on my own farm with things that I hadn't known how to use before.

Before, my sprayer was always polluted with gramoxone (a powerful chemical herbicide) and with insecticides, because that's what we knew and trusted.  But now I have a new sprayer that I only use with organic fertilizers prepared on my own farm, and I'm convinced that they work.

I'm very excited by the work of Sustainable Harvest because I have reached an understanding that all human beings on this Earth should not be selfish with the environment, but rather we should protect it.  Leaving a legacy of a healthy environment for our children, our grandchildren, and all the generations to come is our obligation now.
