The purchase of this Gift of Hope provides a family with the seeds, nursery materials and training to plant a variety of tree species. In addition to providing families with food and income, SHI's reforestation efforts protect soil, mitigate global warming and provide a home for wildlife.

With this gift, you can provide families with the training and tools they need to reforest a plot of tropical forest in Central America. Since 1997, SHI has converted more than 12,000 acres to sustainable uses, thereby saving over 60,000 acres of rainforest from slash-and-burn destruction.
Give a family seeds, nursery materials and training to grow a multistory plantation of crops such as organic cacao*, ginger, rosewood and bananas. Cacao is a valuable cash-crop that can be grown with other crops in plots that mimic the natural forest. These plantations provide families with a good income, mitigate global warming and create wildlife habitat.
* Cacao is the bean used to make chocolate.

This Gift of Hope provides families with training and seeds to grow organic vegetable gardens. Since malnutrition is a threat for many families living in Central America, vegetable gardens give children nutritious food to eat and boost family income by providing produce to sell.

Your Gift of Hope provides a family with the supplies and training to build a wood-conserving stove from local materials. Each stove uses 1/3 the firewood of a traditional open fire, saving ten trees annually. The health of women and children is also greatly improved by removing toxic smoke from the home.

Help provide a silo to protect and store a family's seed and harvests. Saving seeds is a fundamental part of creating a sustainable farm. Silos provide a safe place to store harvest throughout the year, protecting grains and seeds from humidity and pests.
This Gift of Hope provides a woman with startup funding and support to start her own business. Businesses often include bakeries, sewing cooperatives, animal husbandry, small stores, traditional hand crafts and growing and selling spices. Empower women to take control of their futures.

SHI's school programs provide students, teachers and communities with training to grow nutritious food while restoring the environment. SHI's local field trainers teach in the classroom and work with students and educators to plant trees and vegetable gardens.

Biogas digesters convert manure and other organic "waste" into methane gas that can be used for cooking. This Gift of Hope not only reduces deforestation, but improves family health by replacing fire pits which fill homes with toxic smoke.
SHI gives farmers the tools to turn their waste into a resource, keeping it out of the water and using it safely and hygienically to rebuild the soil on their farms. Eco-toilets are quick
to build using local materials and will produce their valuable products for decades.
This Gift of Hope allows community groups to establish and manage a rural bank. SHI provides training and seed capital that families match to start a small business and invest in their future, thereby breaking the cycle of poverty and deforestation in their communities.

Help provide farming families with the techniques and tools necessary to implement sustainable alternatives to migratory, slash-and-burn agriculture practices; and create diversified multi-story forests. To date, SHI participants have planted more than 2.6 million trees, converted thousands of acres of land to sustainable uses, saving tens of thousands of forest acres from being destroyed.

With organic vegetable gardens, wood-conserving stoves, community loan funds and a host of other integrated projects, SHI participants dramatically improve their health
and boost family income while learning to protect the natural environment.

SHI provides long-term assistance (3-5 years) in communities where we have been invited by local people. This Gift of Hope supports the work of 12 families with an SHI Field Trainer for one year.

To do the most good, SHI does not use its limited resources to track gift items from donation to distribution. Your donation will be combined with others to support SHI's mission of helping people and the planet. Sustainable Harvest International works with hundreds of families in dozens of communities, and we put your funding where it is needed the most. Thank you!
